Chapter 1: It was an accident
Jemma Hardgrave was bored. Her pen was tapping the science lab desk she sat at as she stared aimlessly at the board. Her pen taps were getting louder and louder by the minute. The class she was in all had empty faces, staring at nothing. Jemma’s biology teacher was the most boring by far. His voice droned on and on, it had lost interest in her class. They were learning about inheritance and classification in both humans and animals. Jemma’s eyes were slowly drooping, and were about to come to a close when something disturbed her.
“Jemma, are you paying attention?” A voice sharply said as Jemma was woken after nearly falling asleep. She wiped her long brown hair from her face and looked around. She could see her short, stumpy biology teacher, Mr Pyron glaring at her. Mr Pyron was in his mid 50’s and was nearly bald. He was wearing a stained white shirt and a red and white tie. His black trousers were at the floor as they were too long for him. However, you could just see his clean, polished black shoes. At the school, Mr Pyron was the least liked teacher, as he was the most boring in the whole school.
“Yes, sir?” Jemma said as innocently as possible. She glanced to her left where her friends, Max and Billie were sitting. Max was tall, with a good build. He had dirty blond hair and blue eyes. Billie was also tall, she had mid-length curly dirty blond hair and green eyes. No-one would be able to tell that they are siblings, non-identical twins to be exact. They looked at her with the sense of worry, as the knew what was going on, while she took a little nap.
“What is the classification for Lizards?” Mr Pyron asked, narrowing his eyes, knowing that Jemma would get the question wrong. For the past five lessons, she hadn’t paid attention or did her homework for Biology.
“Erm-” She paused to think of a good answer, but her brain stopped when Mr Pyron interrupted her train of thoughts.
“If you would have been kind enough to pay attention in my lessons then you would know. Now for your homework, page two hundred and ten please, due on Tuesday.” Mr Pyron finished his word sharply, as the bell went. Everyone in Jemma’s class were desperate to get out of their morning Biology lesson, and to their next class. Max and Billie waited for Jemma to put everything in her messenger bag and they walked out the classroom and down the stairs.
The next lesson was History and everyone was excited for the lesson. It was either because of their new teacher Miss Appleburr, or it was because of their projects that they were starting. As the trio walked into the History Classroom, they were greeted by a familiar face. Adam Niwe. He had been one of the more popular people in their year who had a tendency to be a bully. He had brown hair with a swept fringe, and brown eyes. Like Max, Adam also had a good build.
“Well, well, well, look who it is.” He sneered at Jemma. Both Adam and Jemma hated each other. Once they had been good friends, but all that changed in Year 8. Both of them hadn’t spoken to each other since then.
“Can you move Adam?” Max asked politely. Max was known for his politeness towards other people, which often got him into trouble, as that got him bullied. Adam however didn’t accept it.
“What did you just say?” Adam rudely asked with a tone of ‘Do-You-Want-To-Start-With-Me’ in his voice.
“He said move, or I’ll get involved.” Billie said, stepping forward. Everyone knows that Billie is tougher than Max, even though he is older than her. They also know that she isn’t afraid to start a fight with anyone.
“What’s going on out here?” A soft voice asked, and stepping into the doorframe was Miss Appleburr. She was in her early twenties and had just qualified to be a secondary school History Teacher. She was wearing a floral skirt, with a white blouse and red heels. She had long brown hair and sparkling green eyes. Everyone agreed that she made an impression on the boys and they were hard to impress.
“Nothing, Miss” Adam replied going red in the face. This made Jemma wonder, did Adam have a crush on Miss Appleburr? Adam hurried inside, quickly followed by Max, then Billie and finally Jemma. Jemma’s desk was next to the window and the radiator, so her seat was good in both winter and summer. As Jemma sat down, Miss Appleburr addressed the class.
“Now class, today as you may know we are starting our class project. The requirements of this project are that you have to be in groups of four and the project is based on local history. This means that you can base the project on anything around the local area. The project is due in a month, as a showcase with the school’s best work from across the subject areas. Today is the research day before the project starts. Now get into your groups.” Miss Appleburr instructed her class of students. Max, Billie and Jemma all glanced at each other to work in a group with them. Max and Billie walked over to Jemma’s table and they sat as a group of three. However that was all about to change. Adam walked over.
“Hey losers, I’m supposed to work with you.” He said as his way of greeting the trio. Miss Appleburr walked over to the group of four from Adam’s old group.
“So, you’re going to be group seven and what is your topic on?” She asked the group of students who looked upset at the thought of being in the same group. They all started to look uncertain in what they should take on for the project.
“How about history of the school?” She suggested, as the group looked up. They all nodded in response and Miss Appleburr continued what she was saying, “The school has a lot of history from what I’ve heard, so why don’t you first draw a floor plan of the school now. You can do it during this lesson.” The four of them nodded and put their chairs under the desk and walked out of the classroom.
Adam led the way, like he knew what he was doing, being closely followed by Max and then Billie and Jemma walking behind them in a pair. The school corridors were all tight corners from left and right. Also the school was built up on three floors, so drawing a floor plan was going to be very hard.
“You lot keep up!” Adam barked as he led the way. Five minutes later after walking around the school, they took a break by the hall stage door. Jemma lent on the wall next to her and felt something give way.
“Arrgh!” She yelled as a hole was visible and Jemma was on the other side.
“Jem, are you alright?” Billie yelled through and shone a light from what looked like a phone. The three other students looked at Jemma, who was on the floor at the bottom of some stairs.
“Yeah, I’m fine and I’ve found a door!” Jemma yelled back. Max, Billie and Adam walked down the stone stairs to where Jemma was now standing by a wooden door. The door looked older than the other doors to the classrooms in the school. This door looked at least 100 years old and was starting to decay.
“Well, try to open it.” Adam quietly spoke. This had caused his fellow classmates to stare at him in shock, as he was being nice to them for once. Max went over to the door and pushed it in. It creaked open. The light from Billie’s phone shone into the room, where there was what looked like magic books and cauldrons. Jemma had seen the Harry Potter movies when she was younger with her older siblings, but she had never believed in magic herself.
One by one, the four students walked into the room cautiously. They looked around and saw potion vials and ingredients for potions. Jemma walked over to an older book on a stand that was labeled, ‘The Big Book of Monsters and Creatures’. On the back of the book, it said ‘Warning: Once this book is opened, the place that you are in will change’. Jemma grinned to herself and opened the book. It looked like it hadn’t been opened. Never. The contents of the book were all on Vampires, Mummies and Werewolves.
“This is all baloney, magic and magical, mythical creatures.” Jemma stated to the others who just stared at her. She closed the book and rejoined the others, who were looking at the articles on the wall.
“Apparently our school isn’t as it seems, it has reports of magic back in the 1960’s.” Adam informed the others. The teachers at their school had been adamant that magic was a fraud and that magicians were just con artists.
“Let’s go back to history and write up about this.” Max suggested and the group turned on their heel and walked back up the stone steps, closing the door to the secret room that they had just found behind them. However when they reached the hall, the group froze in shock.
“Uh-oh” Jemma whispered and the group stared at her and back at what they just saw.
